Earlier this week I had a day marked by deep friendship.
In the morning I spoke briefly with a close friend that I’ve known for almost 30 years. As I told him via text, “I need your sage counsel.” He made himself available on short notice, taking time from a family vacation. It was great to hear his voice and to know that I was correct. I had indeed needed his sage counsel.
That same day, I met a friend for lunch. We’ve worked together for 18 years. Over lunch we caught up and simply enjoyed a comforable meal together.
Between lunch and dinner I spoke to another 30 year friend. We did some shared dreaming and imagining together. It was energizing.
For dinner I met another 30 year friend who happened to be passing through Atlanta. We got current and had a deep heart to heart. As I told him when I dropped him off after, “Based on everything you’ve shared with me, you get an A+. Keep it up.”
As I lay down to sleep that night my heart was full. It dawned on me that I am in a season of life where I am enjoying the fruits of seeds of friendship that were planted long ago. While I’m not newly arrived to such a season, the beauty and blessing of my circumstances overwhelmed me in a way that I am still processing. What a gift to have such long, deep, true, loving, and rich friendships. And what a gift to experience a day that was shaped by them.
As I continue to think about the important theme of “human connection” I want to remember days like the one I’ve described here so that I can have more days like them and live in a world where such days are more common not only for me, but for all of us.
