I’m all about the “Lean on Me” approach to life. I sincerely believe that we are here to help one another in matters great and small. But recently I’ve come to a renewed appreciation for self reliance. We need to be able to look within– within ourselves, within our homes, within our workplaces, to find the strength, courage, and capacity to make it through.

The wind blows and the landscapes that serve as the backdrop to our lives are constantly changing. A good friend moves out of town, a beloved colleague takes a new position, a source of revenue dries up… there are so many uncertainties when we put our hopes in others. That’s not to say that we shouldn’t do so, it’s simply to say that we need to also make sure that we’re able to stand alone, on our own two feet, and continue to thrive and prosper even in those times when the rug is pulled out from under us.

I think Emerson wrote on Self Reliance, but I haven’t read it in awhile. Maybe that’ll be the next step of this thread.
